On this day in 1874, Ehrich Weisz, or as we know him – Harry Houdini, was born in Budapest, Hungary. Houdini left home at seventeen to begin his magic career. He caused a lot of commotion as he continuously escaped from policemen, whether he was in handcuffs or behind bars. Throughout his career, Houdini amazed audiences through his performances involving straitjackets and coffins as well as his appearances in film.

March 23, 1775: Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!

On this day in 1775, American revolutionary Patrick Henry stood in front of the Virginia convention to give a speech where he said his famous quote “give me liberty, or give me death!” In his speech, Henry urged others to start fighting for their freedom from the British rather than later.

Henry proposed to form a volunteer infantry within counties in Virginia as a form of defense. Within a month, it was the start of the American Revolutionary War.

Here’s another set of posters from Swissted, the new book by art director Mike Joyce, who has been creating amazingly cool CD covers, music packaging, and posters for years through his work at Stereotype Design. His side project has been Swissted, his effort to recreate classic punk rock gig posters from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, in Swiss Modernist style. Now there’s a collection of the best of these posters in book form.

On this day in 1865, in one of the greatest inaugural addresses in American history, Abraham Lincoln, beginning his second term as president, spoke at a time of triumph: The Civil War was winding down and slavery receding into the history books. Yet Lincoln, filled with sadness and reflection, spoke not of victory, but of the damage that had been done to the country. He reminded both victor and vanquished that both sides had erred in going to war, despite their bitter disagreement over the war’s central issue, slavery.

“With malice toward none; with charity for all,” Lincoln said, “let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds.”

The address is inscribed, along with his Gettysburg Address, in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. In 2012 Peter Hitchens described the address as “one of the most overwhelming pieces of political prose ever crafted in any language.”

Lincoln had no way of knowing, of course, that in the crowd that day was the actor John Wilkes Booth — who would assassinate the president just six weeks later.

You know what, this may be controversial to many of my liberal friends, but here it is: the sequester should happen. Yes, it will hurt many Americans (including my own mother, who works for Head Start), but in the long run it is the first tiny step in the direction of serious deficit deduction. I used to believe that this country had a revenue problem, and not a spending problem. I now know that this not true at all. We do have a serious problem with out of control, constantly escalating budgets and deficits. If 85 Billion Dollars of cuts over the next two years seriously affects the economy, we have some serious truths to face about the financial situation of this country. There, I’m done with my rant, but I’m very tired of people calling this the end of the world when it is just not.
